Starting at the age of 12, Lawson taught himself to play by ear. He quickly became known as a mature instrumentalist and began to play for bands around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With the desire to start calling his own shots and create his own sound, Lawson created opportunities by forming the Benton Lawson Band and performing as a solo artist for various clubs and venues.
